At a special screening of Danger Close at the Memorial, actor Travis Fimmel shared insights into playing Major Harry Smith and bringing the story of the Battle of Long Tan to the screen.

Earlier this year, the Memorial hosted a special screening of Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan, the gripping film that brings one of Australia’s most famous Vietnam War battles to the big screen.

Among our guests was actor Travis Fimmel, who portrays real-life veteran Major Harry Smith. Smith was the Officer Commanding D Company, 7RAR during the Battle of Long Tann on 18 August 1966.

Travis Fimmel shares his thoughts on portraying Major Harry Smith

My specific character, Harry. He, everything was on his shoulders.
So, some huge decisions which everybody's life relied on.
And, and just the pressure that he must have going through and obviously all the stuff that any, any veteran sees is, you take with you for the rest of your life.
But he just had so much on his shoulders and the average age, I think was 19 and a half
And he was a bit older I think he's 26, maybe when he was there
And that's pretty young to be having so many people's lives in your hands.
